Forest management

Since the establishment of Hokkaido Forests in 1901 more than 580.000 m3 wood has been harvested. Among the Hokkaido Forests,Tomakomai Experimental Forest is one of the earliest established but smaller forest. In the late 1950 in Tomakomai large amounts of timber were harvested of trees that had fallen down after a typhoon. On these harvested areas plantations of conifers such as larch and fir were planted. The plantations are maintained and about 100 trees are still harvested yearly until now however the focus of forest management has shift from supplying an income to Hokkaido University (through timber) to the ecological interactions in different forest ecosystems.
